Morocco to Double Airport Capacity by 2030
As part of its preparations for the 2030 World Cup and tourism development, Morocco aims to double its airport capacity by the end of the decade.
Morocco plans to increase its airport capacity to 80 million passengers by 2030, up from the current 38 million, according to Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch’s statements before members of Parliament. The plan is part of the country’s preparations to co‑host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal, and to boost the tourism sector.
Casablanca airport’s capacity will be raised to 23.3 million passengers, while the tourist hubs of Marrakech and Agadir will respectively reach capacities of 14 million and 6.3 million passengers by 2030. Moreover, Morocco welcomed a record 15.9 million tourists in the first eleven months of the year, surpassing the previous year’s total thanks to the launch of new air routes, according to figures from the Ministry of Tourism.
On the rail front, Morocco is working to extend its high‑speed train network to Marrakech before the World Cup, and later to Agadir. The railway operator also aims to double the number of served cities, reaching 43 cities — about 87 % of the Moroccan population — by 2040.
The prime minister also mentioned the expansion and refurbishment of 45 stadiums and training sites across the six host cities, as well as the construction of a new 115,000‑seat stadium near Casablanca. Investments in building and expanding the stadiums are expected to cost up to 5 billion dirhams, roughly $500 million.
