Agadir to Host the World Congress of Crocodile Specialists in May 2026

Agadir will host the IUCN World Congress of Crocodile Specialists in May 2026, bringing together over 300 experts to discuss crocodile conservation and biodiversity.

The city of Agadir will host, from May 11 to 19 2026, the 28ᵗʰ edition of the World Congress of the Crocodile Specialists Group, organized under the auspices of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). For the first time in North Africa, this leading scientific event will bring together more than 300 experts, researchers and scientists from five continents.

The meeting will take place at Crocoparc Agadir, a facility renowned for its commitment to scientific research, biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness. Held biennially, this congress is the primary global platform for exchange on the study and management of crocodilians.

International Recognition for Crocoparc and Morocco

Agadir’s selection, following a rigorous bidding process, underscores Crocoparc’s scientific credibility and confirms its growing standing within international conservation networks. The Moroccan edition follows those held in Mexico in 2022 and in Darwin, Australia, in 2024.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature is one of the world’s leading alliances dedicated to nature protection, bringing together governments, public institutions and civil‑society organisations. Within it, the Species Survival Commission coordinates thematic expert groups, including the Crocodile Specialists Group.

Crocodilians Under Human Pressures

Under the theme “Crocodilians in an Anthropized World: Conservation, Challenges and Solutions,” this 28ᵗʰ edition aims to map current scientific knowledge and identify best‑practice conservation measures in the face of mounting human pressures on ecosystems.

The work will focus on sustainable population management, protection of natural habitats, coexistence between humans and wildlife, and adaptation strategies to environmental change.

An International Showcase for Agadir and Its Region

Beyond its scientific dimension, the congress offers a major visibility boost for Agadir and the Souss‑Massa region. The event will highlight the destination’s natural, cultural and tourism heritage while strengthening Morocco’s profile in threatened‑species conservation.

The programme will include a veterinary day, plenary sessions, specialized workshops, scientific poster sessions, field excursions and professional meetings designed to foster international exchange and partnerships.

By hosting this global gathering, Crocoparc aims to cement its role as a scientific platform and a catalyst for cooperation in biodiversity protection across Africa.
