The resumption of irrigation from the dams is looming in the Souss‑Massa region.

In an interview with LaVie Eco, Mohamed Alamouri, President of the Moroccan Federation of Agriculture and Rural Development (COMADER), discussed the progress of crop programs for the 2020/2021 agricultural season and highlighted the benefits that recent rains have brought to its smooth execution and irrigation.

«The vegetable season is going well. We can even say it is 100 % completed. It is true that we were concerned about the level of the dams, especially in Souss, in Chtouka Ait Baha. But, fortunately the rain arrived on schedule, allowing us to showcase these achievements», emphasized Mr. Alamouri.

«In this region we aim to resume irrigation from the dams. And to manage water, we plan to implement a water‑delivery schedule starting in March: 4 hours of water, two days a week, to fill the reservoirs and create the necessary reserves; this while we await the seawater desalination project that is still under development. In short, we can say that vegetable cultivation in the Souss region will be normal», the same source said.

Regarding the fruit‑tree sector, everything seems to be running smoothly. “Citrus production this year is 20 % higher than the previous season, as is red‑fruit cultivation, thanks to the plantings made two years ago. Olive trees also benefited greatly from the rains. Several hectares are irrigated and should yield good results. The same applies to forage production, grazing areas, forests, argan, cactus and all niche and terroir products,” revealed the president of COMADER.
