A first in Morocco: Ait Melloul's Faculty of Sharia celebrates the graduation of the inaugural cohort of an English‑taught master’s program.
The Faculty of Sharia at Ait Melloul, affiliated with Ibn Zohr University, hosted the thesis‑defense sessions for the inaugural cohort of the Master’s program in “Applied Sharia Sciences” (Master in Applied Islamic Sciences). This academic program is the first of its kind nationwide to adopt English as the exclusive language of instruction and research in the field of Sharia and legal sciences.
In a statement on this event, Dr. Abdelaziz Ait El Mekki, dean of the Faculty of Sharia, confirmed that the launch of this approach is part of improving the faculty’s educational and academic offerings. He explained that the programme aims to bring Islamic sciences—along with their various specialisations such as comparative jurisprudence, Islamic economics, solidarity finance and family law—closer to English‑speakers. The dean also highlighted that this approach has enabled the college to attract international students from around the world to pursue their studies alongside Moroccan students.
For his part, Dr. Rashid Barada, professor at the college and member of the teaching team, emphasized that this academic project is the result of work and coordination between the college dean and the teaching staff. He noted that Moroccan specialist professors have overseen, for three years, the supervision and direction of scientific research in various fields and issues, such as the endowment system, Islamic economics, family law and contemporary jurisprudential questions.
These discussions lead to a foundational pathway aimed at strengthening openness to the international environment, as the college seeks, through this programme and the International Center for Applied Sharia Sciences, to train researchers familiar with Sharia controls and legal sciences and proficient in foreign languages, qualifying them to represent Moroccan academic excellence in various international forums.
