Agadir hosts the inaugural “Diaspora Investment Days”
Organized in Agadir on July 16‑17, 2026 by the CCIS Souss‑Massa and the CMCI, the inaugural “Diaspora Investment Days” aims to showcase the economic potential of Moroccans worldwide. Leveraging the strong summer influx of the diaspora, the event seeks to turn this return into a business and partnership platform capable of boosting regional investment. The programme offers sharing of successful experiences and presentations by operators, with the ultimate goal of more effectively supporting project developers in their local endeavors.
Estimated at over five million citizens, Moroccans residing abroad (MRE) constitute a major economic development lever for the Kingdom, and especially for the Souss‑Massa region. Indeed, this region has historically been marked by a strong migratory dynamism with Europe, notably France and Belgium.
MRE from this area were among the first Moroccan emigrant contingents, recruited locally to work across the Mediterranean as early as the 1960s‑70s. It should be noted that newer generations of MRE maintain a strong bond with their country of origin, a connection that becomes especially visible during the summer through the “Marhaba” operation. That programme has already recorded the return of 704,714 Moroccans worldwide between 10 and 30 June. Needless to say, this presence—characterized by its size and regularity—represents an economic opportunity that remains under‑exploited.
To address this, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services of the Souss‑Massa region (CCIS‑SM), in partnership with the Moroccan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Belgium‑European Union (CMCI), is organizing the first edition of the Souss‑Massa Investment & Diaspora Days 2026, on 16‑17 July 2026 in Agadir.
Discover the region’s economic potential
According to the organizers, the two‑day event aims to showcase the investment opportunities offered by the Souss‑Massa region. It also seeks to foster business partnerships and strengthen the diaspora’s contribution to territorial economic development. The goal is to enable the MDM to discover the economic potential of their home region, turning their visit into a platform for meetings, business, investment and economic collaboration while supporting the diaspora in its investment initiatives in the area.
The operational programme will feature success‑stories of diaspora‑driven investments in the region. A plenary session will bring together presentations from the Regional Investment Center (CRI) and the Souss‑Massa regional chapter of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM). It will focus, among other topics, on territorial attractiveness, investment opportunities, the role of the private sector and improving the business climate.
A new opportunity to strengthen ties
The 2026 National Day of Moroccans of the World provides another chance to consolidate links between the diaspora and its country of origin. Celebrated annually on 10 August since its creation in 2003 by King Mohammed VI, this yearly event offers an institutional framework at the regional level to highlight the community’s contribution to the Kingdom’s economic, social and cultural development.
In 2025, remittances from MRE exceeded 122 billion dirhams (MMDH) and could reach nearly 128 billion in 2026. These flows are one of the country’s main sources of foreign currency, representing about 8.5 % of GDP. By the end of May 2026, remittances had already surpassed 50.223 billion dirhams, an increase of 8.8 %.
