Greater Agadir: New Bypass to Ease Congestion and Improve Traffic Flow

Local authorities in Greater Agadir are currently working on implementing a new belt road designed to relieve pressure on the city's main arteries and improve traffic flow, especially during rush hour.

This median/bypass road is part of a comprehensive vision to reorganize traffic in the agglomeration, in line with the region’s urban and economic development. The project, coordinated by the municipality of Agadir and the competent services of the Ministry of Equipment and Transport, aims to divert part of the transit traffic—especially heavy trucks and vehicles coming from industrial zones and inter‑urban corridors—in order to reduce congestion in the central neighborhoods.

It also seeks to reinforce road safety and cut the pollution generated by congestion. The new route should connect several strategic points of Greater Agadir, creating more direct links between residential areas, economic hubs and major road interchanges.

The alignment includes designed intersections, roundabouts, and integration with existing infrastructure to limit expropriations and disruptions for residents.

Officials describe the scheme as a structuring project that will accompany the demographic growth of Greater Agadir and the rise in the vehicle fleet. They stress that this belt road is part of a broader package of development initiatives: road upgrades, creation of parking facilities, reorganization of urban transport and promotion of alternative mobility modes. Consultations with elected officials, technical services and, in some cases, residents’ representatives are planned to fine‑tune the alignment and address local concerns, especially regarding nuisances and access to affected neighborhoods. Detailed technical studies and administrative procedures (land, environment, budget) are underway, with the goal of launching construction as soon as possible.

Authorities assure that the new road will help boost the attractiveness of Greater Agadir, support the economic dynamism of the Souss‑Massa region and improve everyday life for road users by reducing travel times and ensuring smoother traffic flow.
