Agadir’s Adrar Stadium: Souss-Massa’s wali reveals details of the major upgrade project and responds to images of the demolition
Before the Souss-Massa Regional Council, Wali Saïd Amzazi detailed the plans to upgrade Adrar Stadium ahead of the World Cup: a stadium roof, 5,000 additional seats and a tourism and sports hub.
The governor of the Souss-Massa region and governor of Agadir Ida-Outanane Prefecture, Saïd Amzazi, unveiled details of the major project to upgrade Adrar Stadium during the second session of the ordinary meeting of the Souss-Massa Regional Council, ahead of its hosting of the final phase of the World Cup. The governor said that the creation of the Sports Facilities Company stemmed from a government decision, with the region contributing 4.5 million dirhams.
As part of the same initiative, an additional budget of 450 million dirhams has been allocated to cover the stadium and develop its facilities and surrounding areas in line with the requirements of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). It was also decided to allocate 2.5 billion dirhams to upgrade related infrastructure and create a new tourism and sports hub. This effort culminated in the signing of agreements to attract international clubs, such as English club Tottenham, with the aim of promoting the city of Agadir and enhancing its international profile.
Regarding the controversy sparked by circulating images of the stadium’s demolition, the governor explained that the works are part of the comprehensive upgrade undertaken by the government. They involve removing the athletics track and lowering the pitch by five metres, which will make it possible to add 5,000 new seats to the stadium’s capacity.
