Agadir launches its first rapid bus transit line

Agadir launches “Amalway Trambus” — The city will inaugurate its first high‑service‑level bus line in May 2026, connecting the port to Tikiouine over 15.5 km, with an expected 60,000 passengers per day.

Marrakech – Agadir officially launched this month its first high‑service level bus line (BHNS), putting into service a system called “Amalway TRAMBUS” that links the city’s port to the Tikiouine district over a distance of 15.5 km with 35 stations.

Originally conceived during the city’s urban mobility plan in 2014, the project was postponed several times from its initial 2022 target. It was pushed to 2023, then 2024, and entered experimental operation in April 2026 before the official launch in May.

The BRT line is managed by the Agadir Mobility Local Development Company; it runs on dedicated lanes and is designed to transport up to 60 000 passengers per day. Buses will run at five‑minute intervals during peak hours, covering the whole route in about 45 minutes.

The fleet consists of 30 articulated buses, 18 to 21 metres long, manufactured at the MAN plant in Poland and equipped with onboard systems at the SEFAMAR MAN Morocco site in Casablanca.

The route follows a north‑south‑east axis through central Agadir. It starts at the fishing and pleasure port, runs along Mohamed V Avenue, turns onto Kettani Avenue to join Hassan II Avenue, then continues through the Kamra and Al Massira intersections.

It passes through the Dakhla neighbourhood, serves Ibn Zohr University, crosses Hay Essalam and Hay Houda, and ends near the Tikiouine market.

The project is part of Agadir’s Urban Development Program (PDU), signed in February 2020. Its total budget rose from an initial 1.2 billion MAD (US$120 million) to roughly 1.4 billion MAD (US$140 million).

Funding comes from multiple sources: the Transport Reform Support Fund (FRAT) contributed 378 million dirhams (US$37.8 million), the Souss‑Massa region provided 160 million dirhams (US$16 million) and the municipality of Agadir contributed 302 million dirhams (US$30.2 million).
